Overview

The term "Toxic Zombie" covers a very large and broad variety of zombies. It refers to zombies created by some form of chemical or biological change, onset by an outside non-living force. In layman's terms, they are zombies created by contact with a body-altering substance. An example would be zombies created by a chemical spill or a radioactive disaster. This particular variety of zombie tends to not follow many of the classic rules of zombies. Unlike their Viral and Parasitic cousins, Toxic Zombies are not driven by the desire to multiply and spread. They often display a slightly higher level of consciousness and have much more control over their body and its functions. This coupled with their driving desire for human flesh makes them a formidable force to be reckoned with.

Outbreak

Depending on its point of origin, a Toxic Zombie outbreak will be very localized and centered around the source of the contamination. Victims in the surrounding area will be unknowingly infected in mass scale and the spreading of the contamination will bring. A Toxic Zombie outbreak is easily one of the most dangerous forms of outbreak because it is not necessarily localized to a bite and or direct contact with an infected being. The source of contamination could easily be air or even waterborne, making the infection process much easier. Possible sources for a Toxic Zombie outbreak are many and diverse, but we will list some common and widely accepted theories to help give you an understanding of what to look out for.

The simplest and most plausible cause for a Toxic Zombie outbreak in today's world would be a large scale chemical spill or accident. The effects that chemicals can have on the human body are limitless, especially when you throw in the variable of an accident mix of unknown substances. You hear stuff like this all the time in the news a violent chemical spill in a local river, and suddenly you have ducks being born with two heads. The concept of a random mix of chemicals being the doom of mankind is not out of the realm of possibilities.

Radiation is one of the strangest and most random occurrences in the known world. It is responsible for all life on earth, and yet is also responsible for the deadliest threat to mankind. It is already proven that a side effect of radiation is mutation, random mutation to say the least. The idea of mutant zombies (I've been waiting to use this term in a serious manner) is a theory that has been around since the discovery of the negative effects of radiation. With today's increasing use of radioactive materials and the production of radioactive waste, it is only a matter of time before someone slips up, and the world is brought to a brain feasting end.

Furthermore along with the theory of radioactive contamination, space probes and satellites crash back to earth on a fairly regular basis. These probes, along with other space bound objects such as meteorites, often contain low and high levels of radiation accumulated on their celestial travels. Space also offers a near infinite spectrum of new materials and substances that don't exist anywhere an earth. Statistically speaking, the possibility for an extraterrestrial substance possessing the capability to create zombies does exist, and that being that case, it seems to only be a matter of time.

Despite the initial cause, the building blocks for this epidemic are already set in place. We need only to drop our guard for a moment to doom the world for eternity.

Infection and Reanimation

possibly contaminated area

After the outbreak, the newly formed zombies will begin to emerge from the source of contamination. These beings are no longer human, they are devoid of what we would consider life, and they are hungry... hungry for human flesh.

Depending on the situation, a Toxic Zombie's bite may not contain the necessary materials to contaminate a victim and bring them over to the legion of the undead, but this is generally uncommon. The zombiefication process is usually triggered by exposure to the contaminating substance. For example, a violent chemical spill in a small town causes all the townsfolk to horribly mutate into zombies.

The process takes place at the sub-cellular level in DNA, and has the ability to horribly mutate the human subject's outward figure and appearance. DNA is the building blocks of life and controls all aspects of a person's being. Anything from behavior, to strength, even required diet and nourishment, is controlled by DNA. A simple change in this code could easily create any form of nightmarish creature, even zombies.

Behavior

Typically, zombies with toxic origins do not spread their plague via infected bite as other zombies do. Therefore, their attacks are usually more vicious and violent as they do not care if a host organism is left intact. Often times, uninfected humans are seen as a source of food to a Toxic Zombie. This is where the concept that zombies eat humans as food originally comes from. That is not to say that other forms of zombie don't still eat human flesh. It is just more common in Toxic Zombies.

As mentioned earlier, Toxic Zombies are more aware of themselves than other types of zombie. This leads to additional dangers such as their ability to retain knowledge from their former life, as well as retaining the ability to learn new concepts and adapt. Toxic Zombies have been known to use doors and break through windows as a means of entry. It is said that they may even possess the ability to lay traps and work together to surround potential victims, but this is all in theory.

Termination and Containment

Toxic Zombies are more frail then their Viral and Parasitic counterparts. They tend to rely more heavily and their circulatory and nervous systems, allowing them to easily be taken down by more conventional methods such as body trauma, blood loss, and nerve gas.

It is important to understand that although Toxic Zombies are susceptible to the same injuries and weaknesses as an average human, they tend to have an extremely lessened sense of pain if any at all. Although in the long run, a gun inflicted chest wound might kill a Toxic Zombie, this may do little to actually slow them down. They will continue to fight until they finally succumb to their injuries.

Although it has never been tested, Toxic Zombies seem to need food to survive. Lacking the ability to produce and gather their own food, they rely completely on humans as their source of nourishment. If you cut off their food supply (for example, quarantining off the infected area), you can effectively starve the undead population out of existence, although this is an untested theory.

Examples of a Toxic Zombie in Popular Culture

  • The plot of the popular Japanese file "Tokyo Zombie" revolves around zombies created from an ever increasingly large pile of toxic garbage.

  • George A. Romero's horror classic "Night of the Living Dead" features zombies seemingly created by fallen radiation-covered NASA space satellite returning from Venus.

  • In the Hong Kong horror/comedy "Bio-Zombie", a soft drink tainted with bio-chemicals has the power to turn people into flesh-eating zombies.
